Grotfjord, Norway

Grotfjord

Other Arctic towns may try to bill themselves as ground zero for the northern lights, but in my opinion Tromsø is the aurora capital of the world. This bustling city of 80,000 has a lot to offer: there’s lots to do and accessible scenery everywhere, and its ideal geomagnetic position produces consistent and impressive aurora. Highlights include excellent museums, winter festivals and a ride on the cable car. Despite its high latitude, northern Norway enjoys relatively pleasant winter temperatures. Having said that, I’ve spent some of my coldest nights out on the fjords in the damp chill of Nord Norge.
