“Ephemeral beauty is one of the core aesthetic values in Japan. Maybe that has something to do with their fascination with the northern lights. Nothing exists forever.”
Each winter thousands of Japanese travel to the Far North to see the elusive northern lights. Often shrieks of joy and tears greet those ephemeral bands of green in the sky. What is it about the aurora that elicits such dramatic responses from people whose culture is known for emotional restraint?

Guided by the Aurora
We are filmmakers from Canada’s North with a unique point of view to our circumpolar neighbours.
Some years ago, Fritz left our Yukon home on an unreasonable journey to communities throughout the auroral oval. At first he was hooked on the pursuit of ephemeral light, but he realized it was fellow northerners and their unusual stories who drew him in. Soon Teresa and the family came along. What started as a chase turned to curiosity and relationships built over time. We’ve spent the past ten years exploring our circumpolar backyard – from Alaska across the Canadian North and the North Atlantic to Scandinavia.
